Father accused of shooting his own son

CLEVELAND -- Cleveland police say a domestic dispute turned deadly when a father allegedly shot and killed his own son.

It happened early Tuesday morning at Lakeview Terrace apartments near West 28th Street and Division Avenue.

Police say the mother and father were arguing.

When the father was leaving the home, he turned and fired in the direction of the porch, where the child was standing.

Frantic family members called for help, but it was too late.

Two-year-old Derrice Alexander Jr. didn't survive.

"It's got to stop in, Jesus name. All we can do is walk by faith and pray for one another. The community needs to get together," said neighbor Diane Howard.

Howard lives near the scene. She heard the shots and saw the mother holding little Derrice in her arms.

Police say the father, Derrice Alexander, threw the weapon into a Dumpster, got into a car and fled to a relative's home a few blocks away, where police arrested him.

"Anytime you have intimate relationships and a weapon is involved, things can go horribly wrong, which they did today," said Deputy Chief Ed Tomba with Cleveland police.

Police say Alexander is a convicted felon who was not allowed by law to have a gun.

"We are still in the process of tracking that weapon. It doesn't appear to be stolen," said Cleveland Police Chief Calvin Williams.

But family members say it was all an accident.

They say Alexander didn't aim at the child and that he was a good father.

He has not been charged yet, but police say he is cooperating with the investigation.

Howard just wants the shootings in this neighborhood to stop.

"This violence, these guns, something has to be done. But it can't take just one person in the community, it takes the whole community," she said.

Police say the couple has a history of domestic violence.
