Fit Friday: Figure out your metabolism

Metabolism. It can hurt us, it can help us, and it's so hard to figure out what yours is.

It's not a matter of calories in and calories out. Your genetics, muscle mass and the way you process oxygen all play a role. Westlake fitness studio Max Strength Fitness has the technology to calculate your exact metabolism.

"Our metabolism is the rate at which we burn through our foods and the amount of calories we burn throughout the day," says Jeff Tomaszewski, owner of Max Strength.

He has the ability to measure a person's exact metabolism.

First, height, weight and body fat percentage is calculated. Then for 10 minutes this machine measured how efficiently a person is processing oxygen.

That allows Jeff to determine resting energy expenditure, which is the amount of calories your body burns at rest.

From that, Jeff determined Maureen Kyle burns 176 calories for every 30 minutes of moderate exercise. If you think about it, that's about one cookie.

But most importantly, he could pinpoint an exact calorie range for weight loss. He calculates within a 300 calorie window.

Jeff says most people eat more than they should because they miscalculate how much their body burns or how many calories they take in, even if they are keeping track on an app.

He also recommends strength training to build muscle. That's the only way to boost your metabolism.
