Former Laurel teacher, coach indicted on rape charges

SHAKER HEIGHTS - A former Laurel School teacher and softball coach was indicted on multiple rape charges Monday.

According to Cuyahoga County Court records, Mark Newton was indicted on two charges of rape, two charges of gross sexual imposition two charges of kidnapping and two charges of sexual battery.

Newton taught at Laurel middle school from 2007-13. He was also a softball coach.

The sexual misconduct allegedly occurred during the 2013-13 school year and the student came forward in Fall 2014. 

On Monday, the school issued a statement with an update on the case, stating that there were two alleged incidents.

"We remain deeply disturbed by this situation and our hearts are with the former student and her family, as well as with the entire Laurel School community, past and present, as we work through this difficult time and provide support to our students, alumnae. parents and faculty," the statement said.
