Former Mayfield school employee facing charges found dead

MAYFIELD HEIGHTS -- A former contracted employee of the Mayfield City Schools who was facing multiple felony charges was found dead Thursday morning.

A report from the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner's office says Dean T. Ochi, 43, was found dead at 1:15 a.m. Thursday morning in a grassy area near Knollwood Cemetery by Miklus Florist at the corner of SOM Center and Marsol roads.

A candlelight vigil is planned tonight at 9 p.m. at Mayfield High School.

On Monday, Ochi was indicted on 14 felony counts, which include 10 felony counts of sexual battery, one count of disseminating material harmful to a minor and three counts of illegal use of a minor in nudity-oriented material.

The school district became aware of the allegations in April between Ochi and a Mayfield High School student.

Ochi served as a contracted athletic trainer from the Cleveland Clinic at the school.

Mayfield Heights Police say they received a call at 12:05 a.m. Thursday that Ochi had left home with a handgun. His Nissan Rogue was found parked at Miklus at 1:08 a.m. by a Gates Mills police officer.

His body was found at 1:15 a.m. He appeared to have died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner. A handgun was found near his body.

According to Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court records, Ochi's original arraignment set for Aug. 18 was changed to 8:30 a.m. Friday at the request of Ochi's attorney Michael Shaughnessy on Wednesday.

Ochi's death remains under investigation.
