CLEVELAND -- The Haslam family has donated $1 million to the local committee that's bringing the Republican National Convention to Cleveland, according to Chairman Terry Egger.
Egger made the announcement to Cleveland City Council members at today's council summer session, where the city also committed $2.5 million to the effort.
Earlier this year, County Executive Ed FitzGerald and Cuyahoga County Council approved setting aside the same amount, $2.5 million from county coffers.
A standing-room-only crowd filled council chambers for Wednesday's meeting, where Egger laid out preliminary convention plans.
Egger told the panel that the committee has raised roughly $30 million and is seeking an additional $25 million to $40 million to fully fund the event.
In regard to the city money, Mayor Frank Jackson had asked council to fast-track legislation approving the funds because the Republican National Committee needs signed contracts by mid-August.
