Testing time means anxiety, even sickness, for some kids

CLEVELAND -- Spring means it is testing time, and that is creating test anxiety for some kids.

"I think it is getting worse not better," says Dr. Deb Lonzer of the Cleveland Clinic Children's Hospital. "We see kids with stomach aches, headaches and vomiting, and it seems to go away after testing."

Lonzer also encourages parents to downplay the testing at home and try to distract their kids with other activities or even just going outside to play.

She also says typical third-graders can sit for about 60 to 90 minutes, so asking them to sit for 2-1/2 hours for tests is difficult.

Next year, districts say there will be more testing because Common Core testing will be in place.
