Driver, 20, kills pedestrian, drives away

CLEVELAND - Cleveland police say the driver of a 2008 Ford Edge SUV struck a man 56, who was crossing St. Clair Avenue moments after midnight Saturday.

Police reported that Zaire Abbott, 20, of Cleveland was driving the SUV westbound on St. Clair Avenue in excess of the posted speed limit of 35 mph.

Police say that the man tried to cross St. Clair from north to south (not in a marked crosswalk) in front of 13825 St Clair Avenue.

Abbott's SUV struck him, propelling him forward and causing his body to strike the left side of a parked but unoccupied 1999 Chrysler LHS.

Abbott then drove off and didn't call 911 nor try and help the man, police said.

Police say Abbott went straight home and told her father and he called police. She was arrested at her home without incident and police say alcohol and speed are factors in this incident.
