Failed Lake County smash-and-grab ends in Cleveland

Suspects damaged a store in an attempted 'smash and grab.'

WILLOUGHBY HILLS, OHIO - Four men in two stolen minivans tried but failed when they tried to steal an ATM from the BP/Seven Eleven on SOM Center Road.

Police Sgt  Mike Gerardi said that, early Saturday morning while the store was still open, two stolen mini vans out of Cleveland entered the lot of BP/ Seven on SOM Center Road.

Girardi said one of the vans backed up at a high rate of speed into the front of the store. The driver of that van and three other men from the second van entered the store on foot and attempted to steal the ATM machine, but were unsuccessful.

Then they drove off in the remaining stolen minivan. It was spotted minutes later and the minivan spun out in the City of Cleveland where all four suspects got out and ran away.

Girardi said a loaded handgun magazine was recovered from the stolen vehicle in Cleveland.

Although the store was open at the time of the attempted robbery, there were no reported injuries.

Anyone having information on this crime is asked to call the Willoughby Hills Police Department at 440-942-9111 and ask for Detective Ron Parmertor.
