EAST CLEVELAND - At noon today, a group gathered to remember Timothy Russell and Malissa Williams in the parking lot of Heritage Middle School in East Cleveland.
Williams and Russell were shot and killed by Cleveland police officers following a police chase that started outside the Justice Center in Cleveland and ended in the parking lot there on Nov. 29, 2012.
Cleveland police chased a 1979 Chevy Malibu, driven by Russell, 43, of Maple Heights, and his passenger Williams, 30. With 137 shots fired, Russell was hit 23 times and Williams was hit 24 times.
In all, more than 100 officers and 60 police vehicles were involved in the pursuit. Thirteen officers fired shots. Officer Michael Brelo, who fired the final shots, was the only officer who stood trial. He was acquitted of two counts of voluntary manslaughter in May 2015.
