PERRY TOWNSHIP, OHIO - A Lake County man died Thursday morning after the vehicle he was driving went left of center and struck an ambulance that had its lights and sirens activated.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating the crash that involved a Perry Township ambulance and a pickup truck towing a trailer. It happened at 11:25 a.m. today on South Ridge Road, east of Davis Road in Perry Township in Lake County.
OSHP reported that a red 2003 Ford E-450 ambulance, owned by Perry Township Fire Department, was in emergency response. It was heading west on South Ridge Road with its emergency lights and sirens activated as it was responding to a motor vehicle crash.
That's when it was struck by the F-350 pickup truck towing a trailer with a car on it, according to the OSHP report.
Witnesses say that there was a silver PT Cruiser traveling east on South Ridge Road. The car came to a stop in the roadway, next to guardrail, yielding to the ambulance.
The pickup truck and trailer were headed east on South Ridge Road behind the PT Cruiser, it was unable to stop in time.
Troopers say it drove left of the center line, striking the ambulance in the left front passenger transport box. The ambulance stayed in the roadway but the truck and trailer traveled off the left side of the roadway, according to OSHP.
The driver of the ambulance was Charles Eisenhart, 51, of Perry. His passenger was Carmen Tibaldi, 36, of Painesville.
OSHP troopers say both sustained minor injuries and were taken to Madison Hospital where they were treated and released. OSHP says both were wearing their seatbelts.
The driver of the pickup was Douglas Shipman, 52, of Painesville. OSHP says he was killed on impact.
His passenger, Jacob Shipman, 21, was injured and was taken to TriPoint Medical Center. Both men were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash, according to OSHP.
Troopers say speed appears to be a contributing factor in the crash. It does not appear alcohol is a factor in the crash, troopers said.
The traffic crash remains under investigation.
