Coast Guard: Two pulled from Lake Erie, 1 dead

One person dead after boat capsizes

EASTLAKE, Ohio -- Just after 1:30 p.m. Saturday, the fire department was sent to Lake Erie behind Lakeline Village Hall for a boat accident.

Along with mutual aid from Willoughby, Willowick and Kirtland fire departments, they found one conscious person in the water holding onto the breakwall.

They found another person floating face-down in the water about 50 yards to the west and about 6-8 feet from the breakwall.

Eastlake divers went into the water and the unconscious victim was taken from the water and taken to Lake West Hospital. The U.S. Coast Guard confirmed to WKYC that the unconscious person has died.

The conscious victim was also taken to Lake West Hospital. That person's condition is unknown.

The divers then searched the capsized boat and no other victims have been found. The U.S. Coast Guard tells WKYC that the boat was 17 feet long and may have hit the breakwall.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Department Marine Patrol, the Ohio Division of Watercraft, the Wickliffe Fire Department and the U.S. Coast Guard also responded.

The investigation into the incident is being handled by the Ohio Division of Watercraft, according to Eastlake Fire Department.
