State of the Suburbs: Mentor

MENTOR – A population of about 47,000, Mentor is filled with almost 1,500 businesses, more than 160 restaurants, an ice arena, public golf course, beach, marina, nature preserve and acres upon acres of parkland.

The Mentor school district consistently receives favorable state report cards and home values are on the rise, with house time on the market being one of the lowest in Lake county.

One of the problems they're dealing with now, as many suburbs are, is drug-related. The city has gotten aggressive on drug dealers and increased drug arrests by 16 percent. Those numbers have correlated into a 19 percent decrease in thefts.

The city has had record income tax collections throughout the past couple of years and is trying to use a large general fund to enhance and maintain services and amenities.

In the future, Mentor officials say they want to continue the restoration of the Mentor marsh.
