Missing kayakers presumed safe; Lake Erie search called off

July 5, 2017: The Coast Guard called off a search for two kayakers who were reported missing in Lorain County. Authorities say the kayaks were located, and the search for the two people has been called off.

LORAIN COUNTY, Ohio -- Two kayakers are presumed safe Wednesday morning after the Coast Guard searched for the missing pair in Lake Erie.

Authorities tell WKYC the search was called off after a reporter spotted the kayaks involved approximately 100 feet from Grumpy's Bait and Tackle boat launch.

The Coast Guard was using a helicopter to look for 27-year-old Nicole Launert and 30-year-old Mike Smith after they did not return back to their boat launch in Lorain on Tuesday.

It began when the owner of Grumpy’s Bait and Tackle called the Coast Guard Station Lorain to tell them that the two kayakers were expected to be back by sunset, after leaving the dock around 6:30 p.m.
