Elyria man runs down kids on bikes

ELYRIA, OHIO - Elyria Police report that they arrested Zachary M. Lee, 24, on Tuesday and charged him with felonious assault and he was taken to jail to await an appearance in Elyria Municipal Court.

The incident happened just after 8 p.m. Monday on 9th Street. Officers were called about three bicyclists that had been struck by a vehicle, according to the report.

Police spoke to the three and they said they were riding their bikes eastbound on 9th St. from Gas USA when a dark blue in color vehicle, with black wheels, possibly a Dodge or a Chrysler Mini Van, driven by a heavy-set, white man wearing a green shirt with thin white strips, tried to run them over, according to the police report.

Police learned that a 9th Street resident had surveillance video outside his home and obtained the video, according to the police report.

Police say the video shows a blue van eastbound on 9th St. behind 3 bicyclists. According to the report, the video shows the van striking one of the bicyclists on the roadway and then the van drives onto the curb lawn and strikes a second bicyclist while going around a tree.

The report states that the video shows the van reentered the roadway and drove off.

None of the three bicyclists was badly hurt, according to police. One had his knuckles scraped and another had his left foot run over by the van's tire. The third bicyclist was unhurt.
