Lorain resident dies in train crash, police investigating

LORAIN - The Lorain Police Department Traffic Bureau is investigating a 29-year-old Lorain resident’s death, after he was struck by a train.

It happened on the Norfolk Southern Corporation rail road tracks near W. 17th Street and Utica Avenue around 6 p.m. Thursday.

Police say the initial investigation determined that a train was traveling eastbound on the tracks and a pedestrian, identified as Jalisco Leos, was walking in the same direction on the tracks, reportedly talking on a cell phone.

According to Lorain police, the engineer of the Norfolk Southern train sounded the horn and put its emergency brakes on to try an avoid striking Leos.

The Lorain Police Department Traffic Bureau was assisted by the Lorain Police Auxiliary and Norfolk Southern Police Department in this incident.
