LORAIN -- Columbus ships Pinta and Nina are coming to Lorain this week.
The replica ships will arrive in Lorain at 1 p.m. Thursday and will dock at Black River Landing, 421 Black River Lane.
They'll remain in Lorain until leaving Tuesday morning.
The ships will be open to the public Friday through Monday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Cost to tour the ships is $8 for adults, $7 for seniors and $6 for students 5 to 16. Children 4 and under are free. No reservations are necessary.
According to the Columbus Foundation, the Nina was built by hand and without the use of power tools and is considered to be the most historically correct Columbus replica ever built.
The Pinta was recently built in Brazil and is a larger version of the archetypal caravel. Historians consider the caravel the "space shuttle of the 15th century" when it comes to ships.
Teachers or organizations wishing to schedule a 30-minute guided tour with a crew member should call (787) 672-2152 or visit www.thenina.com and click on "take a tour." This is open to groups with a minimum of 15 people and costs $5 a person.
