6:30 p.m. Officials are urging Ohioans to be patient in dealing with a winter storm that has cut power to nearly 172,000 customers state wide. Most of the people effected are in southern and central Ohio. Some customers could be without power fo two days. The weight of snow topped with ice and then another layer of snow is pulling down power lines. On Wednesday afternoon, Duke Energy was reporting more than 32,000 outages in southern Ohio and northern Kentucky -- about 21,000 of which were in Ohio. American Electric Power is reporting more than 121,000 Ohio customers without service and South Central Power Co. is reporting nearly 23,000 customers without power.
4:55 p.m.: The Ohio State Highway Patrol now says only one fatality has been blamed on accidents in the storm. The fatality occurred in suburban Cincinnati where a pick-up truck collided with a salt truck. The OHSP says it wrongly reported a fatality in another accident near Findlay. In all, 581 accidents were reported statewide in the storm -- 65 with injuries.
4:28 p.m. The Cleveland police has extended the service hours at the Police Vehicle Impound unit. A number of cars were towed that were in violation of the city's parking ban. Police will staff the Vehicle Release window on the first floor of the Justice Center (1300 Ontario Street) until 9 p.m. Those seeking to pick up their car must show current title or registration for the vehicle along with a photo ID.
4:10 p.m.: The National Weather Service has cancelled the Winter Storm Warning for the Cleveland area. It remains in effect for some of the eastern suburbs and the southern portion of the viewing area. Now, the digging out begins in earnest.
3:55 p.m.: The storm is almost out of here and the digging out is beginning in earnest. Firefighters are reminding everyone to remember to clear the area around any hydrants in your neighborhood to keep them clear and available for use in the event of a fire.
2:50 p.m.: ODOT District 4 which handles the part of the state that includes Akron, Canton, Kent and the extreme northeast portion of the state is reporting the following information in terms of general snowfall in its counties and the number of crews working to clear roads:
- Ashtabula 10" of snow/21 crews
- Mahoning 8" of snow/15 crews
- Portage 8" of snow/18 crews
- Stark 8" of snow/21 crews
- Summit 8" of snow/19 crews
- Trumbull 8" of snow/26 crews
Statewide ODOT has 1,200 plow and salt crews working on the roads. Crews have been plowing in groups to get roads cleared.
2:40 p.m.: According to Brook Park Police I-480-- which has been shut down since the morning-- will likely remain closed through 5 p.m. if not later. An accident toppled a power pole and utility lines and the highway has been closed in both directions between W. 130th and W.150th.
2:35 p.m.: Statewide more than 150,000 power outages are blamed on the storm. Most of the outages are in the central and southern portions of the state where there was more precipitation in the form of ice than snow. There are scattered outages reported in northern Ohio which saw mostly snow from the storm.
2:27 p.m.: The storm is being blamed on two deaths in the state, both as a result of car accidents. One accident happened in suburban Cincinnati when a salt truck and pick-up truck collided. The other happened in Hancock County in Northwest Ohio. So far, the Ohio State Highway Patrol says 581 accidents have been reported statewide--65 with injuries-- as a result of the storm.
2:02 p.m.: Hopkins and Akron-Canton airports remain open. Hopkins is reporting delays especially for flights departing for East Coast destinations such as Newark, Philadelphia, New York and Boston. Those cities are in the path of the same storm. In addition, a spokeswoman at Hopkins says Contiental in anticipation of the storm pre-cancelled about 50% of their flights. Akron-Canton is also reporting some delays. Passengers are encouraged to check with their carrier before heading to the airport.

1:21 p.m.: The City of Cleveland says it has 54 crews working on the main and secondary roads and 30 additional crews are working on the residential streets.
1:17 p.m.: I-480 remains closed in Brook Park.
1:15 p.m.: Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson says in an effort to be proactive about the winter storm that has dumped heavy snowfall on the city, he is calling for a staggered dismissal of downtown workers.
City Hall is recommending workers be sent home on the following schedule should employers agree take part in an early dismissal:
State and Federal employees at 1:30 p.m.
City and County offices at 2:30 p.m.
Businesses after 3:00 p.m.
Downtown Cleveland Alliance Ambassadors are out helping to clear ADA accessible sidewalk ramps and assist pedestrians and motorists.
If you need assistance look for an ambassador in a blue & gold uniform or call 216.621.6000.12:30 p.m.: Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson has requested city businesses to close early because of the storm. As a result LAKETRAN will dispatch buses to pick up passengers for return trips to Lake County at 2:30 p.m. One bus will begin at CSU at 2:30 p.m. and follow the Route 12 route. A second bus will depart from Rockwell at 2:30 p.m. and follow the Route 10 route. Both buses will stop at all Lake County Park-N-Rides as needed. All afternoon departures will run as scheduled.
12:16 p.m.: The Summit County Juvenile Court closed early at 12 noon and canceled all afternoon and evening programs.
12:14 p.m.: The Lake County Common Pleas Court including Domestic Relations, Juvenile and Probate Divisions and the Clerk of Courts will close at 1:00 p.m. because of the winter storm.
12:10 p.m.: John Carroll University has announced the men's and women's basketball games scheduled for tonight against Muskingum have been postponed until January 29.
11:56 a.m.: The Cleveland Metropolitan School District says schools will dismiss early due to the winter storm that has dumped heavy snow across northern Ohio.
According to a spokeswoman, schools that normally dismiss at 2:30 will let out at noon. Schools that dismiss at 4 p.m. will dismiss at 1:30 p.m.
The district is in the process of notifying parents.
The district was one of just a handful that remained open despite the storm.11:55 a.m.: LAKETRAN, the regional transit authority for Lake County says all bus services are running today. However, some local fixed routes are facing delays of up to 30 minutes due to the heavy snow.
Dial-a-Ride passengers are encouraged to call the cancellation line at 440.350.1099 if their plans change and they do not require a ride.
LAKETRAN says it expects afternoon commuter express service to run on its normal schedule this afternoon.
11:20 a.m.: The Crowne Plaza Hotel on St. Clair Avenue in downtown Cleveland is offering a deeply reduced "Snowflake" room rate for people who do not want to chance the roads on the commute home. For more information contact the hotel at 216.771.7600.
11:15 a.m.: Cuyahoga Community College is canceling classes effective at noon. The campus is putting a Level 1 closing into effect. All afternoon and evening classes and activities will be canceled. The college will remain open for regular business operations.
11:08 a.m.: The City of Barberton says the Barberon Municipal Building closed at 11 a.m. The Barberton Municipal Court will close at 2 p.m. due to the winter storm.
10:33 a.m.: The Medina County Sheriff's Office is reporting a train derailment in Spencer. Two engines from the train are reportedly off the tracks. There are no reports of injuries.
10:20 a.m.: ODOT says it has 65 plows working around the clock to clear the area highways and roadways. Here is a roundup of road conditions from various counties as of mid-morning:
- Cleveland has 60 snow removal crews working on the streets. A snow ban remains in effect.
- Ashtabula Highway Patrol describes roads as "bad" in that county.
- The Geauga County Sheriff's office reports slippery road conditions despite road crews' best efforts to keep up. A number of crashes are being reported, but no major accidents. Traffic is moving at a maximum of 35 to 40 m.p.h. on the roads.
- The Berea Post of the OHP reports conditions on the Ohio Turnpike are snow covered and slippery, but the Turnpike remains open. There is a report of a jack-knifed truck in the Milan area, an overturned car near Lordstown. There are also numerous reports of vehicles sliding off the roadway.
- The Lorain and Medina Posts of the OHP report slow travel and slippery roads. There are no major crashes. Medina has issued a Level 2 Snow Emergency meaning people should travel only if necessary. Workers are being asked to call ahead to determine if they must report to work before venturing out.
- The Summit Post of the OHP reports heavy snowfall and extremely slippery road conditions. In addition, law enforcement officers say many motorists are going far too fast for the road conditions and are asking people to slow down especially on bridges and overpasses. Summit County remains under a Snow Emergency issued by the Sheriff asking people to travel only if absolutely necessary.
10:15 a.m.: The Brook Park Fire Department is reporting that I-480 is closed east and west between West 130 and West 150. There is a report of a downed power pole and utility lines in that area.
9:58 a.m.: The WKYC iAlert system reached a total of 779 morning closings and cancellations. Be sure to click on the link above for the latest iAlert closings.
9:44 a.m.: The State of Ohio reports that a number of Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicle Deputy Registrar locations across the state may be closed or offering limited services due to ice and snow received statewide from the storm. Those needing to go to a BMV are asked to call ahead to the Deputy Registrar or Driver Exam Station to determine if they are open today and/or the rest of the week. 9:34 a.m.: The Bedford Municipal Court will close at noon after getting through the morning docket.
9:29 a.m.: Despite the snow, delays at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport are minimal with a few notable exceptions. Airports in Dallas- Forth Worth, TX remain closed due to freezing rain and ice. Flights departing for that destination will not be allowed to depart until at leas 10 a.m. In addition, flights headed for the airport in Newark are being delayed for 1 hour and 52 minutes. Flights departing for Philadelphia International Airport are being delayed 2 hours and 23 minutes. The East Coast is being hit with snow and ice from the same storm system. 9:18 a.m.: Maple Heights Police is reporting that city is enacting a snow parking ban.
9:05 a.m.: Judge Gilligan at Parma Municipal Court has announced the court will close at 1 p.m. today. The court will handle the cases on the morning docket but will cancel the afternoon docket.
8:59 a.m.: While travel conditions may be rough here, northern Ohio may have gotten off easily from this storm compared to the rest of the state. From Columbus southward, heavy ice accumulations have led to thousands of power outages. So far AEP and Duke Energy are reporting outage of 70,000 plus in central and southern Ohio.
8:50 a.m: Pat Butler from WTAM Total Traffic reports there are substantial delays for travelers on all highways due to the snow packed roads. In addition, a number of accidents are contributing to delays. A flipped vehicle on the Turnpike East near I-71 is still impacting traffic. Accidents are also being reported at: I-71 North at W. 25; I-77 South just before Fleet; I-77 North at Broadway. See the link above for more traffic resources.
8:20 a.m. The WKYC iAlert system has received 734 closings and cancellations so far. While most school districts have closed, Cleveland, East Cleveland, Cleveland Heights-University Heights and Shaker Heights schools all remain OPEN.
8:10 a.m.: All Cuyahoga County buildings are delaying their opening by 2 hours due to the storm.
8:08 a.m.: Barberton has been added to the list of cities enforcing snow parking bans. The city says the ban will stay in effect until the snow stops and all streets have been cleared.
8:05 a.m.: The Akron-Canton Airport is reporting a handful of flight cancellation and/or delays but otherwise flights are on time. Travelers should check with their airline before heading to the airport and leave time for the travel as the highways remain treacherous.
8:00 a.m.: The WKYC iAlert system has received 707 closings and cancellations.
7:50 a.m.: The City of Akron says its snow parking ban will remain in effect until Friday, January 30 at 6 p.m. Akron police will strictly enforce the ban and will tow cars parked on city streets which impede the work of the city's snow removal efforts.
7:48 a.m.: AEP is reporting scattered power outages in Tuscarawas County. Heavier outages are concentrated in areas around Columbus and Athens, Ohio which received more ice than northeast Ohio.
7:45 a.m.: FirstEnergy is reporting scattered power outages numbering 500 or less in Erie, Lorain, Medina and Columbiana Counties. Check the latest outage information HERE
7:40 a.m.: Pat Butler with WTAM Total Traffic is reporting a new accident on the Turnpike East at I-71. There is a flipped vehicle on the right side of the road. In addition, earlier accidents at 480 East at Granger and 90 East at 490 have now been cleared.
7:30 a.m.: WKYC's iAlert system has reached 693 closing and cancellations.

7:10 a.m: The WKYC iAlert system has received so far 667 closings and cancellations due to the storm. Most school districts have cancelled classes. Check the complete list HERE.
6:20 a.m.: Summit County Sheriff Drew Alexander has issued a Snow Emergency for that county asking that all unnecessary travel be curbed because of the treacherous conditions due to snow and blowing and drifting snow.
6:15 a.m.: Cleveland says it has 60 crews working to keep up with the snow on the main streets. However, due to the rate the snow is piling up most main streets and highways remain snow packed and slippery. Drivers should plan on plenty of extra time to get to their destination.
5:05 a.m.: The A.J. Celebrezze Federal Building is on a 2-hour delay.
5:00 a.m.: Numerous cities have snow parking bans in effect. That list includes:
