AKRON -- It's coming to life, one steel beam at a time, and already its shape has changed the look and feel of downtown Akron.

The University of Akron's new Summa Field at Infocision Stadium opens Sept. 19 as the Zips host Indiana, but already the concept of an on-campus stadium is roaring to life.

With 27,000 seats and a capacity of 30,000 when standing-room and end zone grass seats are included, the new home of the Zips aims to create a new atmosphere on campus.

"We will for the first time have authentic collegiate tailgating activities going on before and after the game," said Mack Rhoades, Athletic Director.

The $60 million project has been a university goal for years as football fans grew frustrated with the aging Rubber Bowl, which is several miles east of the downtown campus.

Construction crews still have a lot to accomplish before the home opener, but the rise of the stadium's exterior is already generating excitement.

"It's going to create more spirit and more on campus collegiate and college spirit for the University of Akron," said Ted Curtis, Vice President for Capital Improvements.
