The ongoing recession could take a bite out of summertime fun in Northeast Ohio.  Many cities have been forced to slash budgets and make cuts to cope with the recession and in some places that means trimming back event budgets.

Below is a look at some local cities and what effects, if any, the recession will have on festivals, fireworks and other summertime fun events.

Mentor

  • Annual fireworks display is being scaled back from $35,000 to $25,000
  • 3 city pools will operate 6 days with rotating days off
  • Bus service to the pools cancelled
  • "It's Better In Mentor" festival is planned as scheduled

Lakewood

  • No cuts or plans to scale back events

Elyria

  • Fireworks have been cancelled
  • Trying to keep at least 1 of the 4 city pools open, day-by-day status
  • Annual Apple Festival is funded separately and is planned as scheduled

Mayfield Village

  • Fireworks display is in the last year of a 3 year contract and planned as scheduled
  • Thursday concert series is scaled back and will begin in July
  • 50's Cruise-In and Fourth of July activities planned as scheduled

Strongsville

  • No cuts or plans to scale back events

Akron

  • The city says it has been able to economize and find creative ways to cut expenses to avoid cancelling events. All summer events are planned as scheduled.

Euclid

  • Fireworks display cancelled
  • All other summer programs/activities planned as scheduled

Readers: If you known any cuts or plans to scale back events in your city due to financial constraints leave a comment in the section below.
