HIGHLAND HILLS -- A 24-year-old Highland Hills police auxiliary officer has now been put on unpaid leave while the police department investigates him of allegedly using the Law Enforcement Gateway web site for personal use via his personal laptop computer while away from the police station.

The Gateway web site allows access to the public's driving and criminal records.

The Cuyahoga Falls man had been detained at the Bedford Heights Jail since Friday but has since been released, according to village spokesman Powell Caesar.

Caesar says the the investigation by the department continues, in cooperation with the Cuyahoga County Prosecutor's Office.

His personal computer has been turned over to the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation and Identification (BCI) for forensic tests on its content.

The auxiliary officer has worked for the department for less than six months.
