AKRON -- Former Petland employee Liz Carlisle was sentenced to probation, given a $250 fiine and is required to complete 120 hours of community service. She was charged with animal cruelty in the drownings of two rabbits at the now-closed Akron Petland store.
Carlisle, 20, of Ravenna, gained national attention in August after posting a picture of herself on Facebook holding the two dead rabbits.
She originally pleaded not guilty to two counts of animal cruelty but changed her plea Tuesday to guilty.
She was sentenced Thursday by Akron Municipal Court Judge Stephen Fallis. Fallis could have sentenced her to a maximum of 180 days in jail.
Her attorney, Ron Gatts, said she has been the target of death threats and verbal attacks since the story went public.
In earlier court appearances, animal rights protestors had gathered outside the Harold K. Stubbs Justice Center.
