CLEVELAND -- He's not exactly a household name in most of Ohio.
But Rob Portman is on many political observers' and Republican short lists as a possible running mate for John McCain.
Portman was a 12 year Congressman from the Cincinnati area. He also served in two Cabinet level posts in the Bush administration. He was U.S. Trade Representative and Director of the Office of Management and budget.
He did a long interview with Senior Political Correspondent Tom Beres talking about his V.P. possibilities, support for McCain and long-range political plans.
Many see his age --52--, experience in two branches of government, expertise in economic issues and bipartisan popularity as strengths that could help McCain's candidacy.
Portman downplays such talk. He says he's glad to be back in Ohio spending time with his wife and three teen-ager children.
But what if McCain asked him to join the ticket?
"I'll cross that bridge if I come to it," Portman said.
Some see Portman's ties to President Bush as a possible liability.
He talks up the job creation benefits of NAFTA, claiming it's been good for Ohio's economy. That's a position many in Northeast Ohio disagree with.
Portman openly acknowledges his wish to run for future office. Governor or Senator are the two jobs he may focus on.
For now, he's helping spread the McCain message of lower taxes, energy independence and "the right" change.
