CLEVELAND -- Maybe houses and cars aren't moving in this depressed economy, but firearms sales are up 8 to 10-percent nationwide, according to state and federal statistics.
Long-time friends and target shooters, Bob Vickers and former judge David Cullen, aren't in the market for new guns, but say the outcome of the presidential race could affect a future purchase.
"I think the federal government is in the business of taxation by regulation," Vickers said.
A spokesperson for Massachusetts based Smith & Wesson, says Democratic presidential nominee Barrack Obama is not considered 'pro-gun' so the company says consumers expect increased taxes on ammo and weapons if he's elected.
Candidate opinions will influence Cullen's vote.
"It will certainly impact it but it will not determine it. There are just too many other uncertainties to make one question dominate," Cullen said.
Gun shop owner Diane Donnett says politics and fear of property crimes in an uncertain economy are two reasons her handgun sales are up 10 top 15 percent over last year. Analysts say tough times fuel fears of crime and disorder.
"I'm seeing more people, new people, wanting to learn how to shoot, wanting to purchase their first gun because they are afraid for their lives," Donnett said.
We know from history that fear is a great motivator. Just after the Virginia Tech shooting, hand gun sales went up dramatically in that state.
Applications for carry conceal licenses went up 60 percent. In Cuyahoga County the number of conceal carry permit applications is up 25 percent over all of last year.
"People are worried. People are worried about their rights to own guns being taken away from them," Donnett said.
Whether it's real fear or just the perception of dark days to come. More Clevelanders and Americans are arming themselves.
We checked eight other gun stores in the Cleveland area. Some reported no increase, other gun shop owners have seen handgun and ammo sales up 10 to 30 percent.
No one has seen a drop in sales despite the recessed economy.
