I have always said that "criminal and stupid" is my favorite combination. And this story just proves my point.
If you are going to burglarize some place, why would you take your cell phone with you anyway?
The Associated Press reported Tuesday that two Maplewood, Minnesota burglary suspects were arrested after police say one of them accidentally pocket-dialed 911 and left the line open as the pair discussed the crime. Maplewood Police Chief Paul Schnell says the dispatcher got a call and hang-up, then another call that stayed active.
Now, know that the call was made on April 1 -- April Fool's Day -- so one could assume this was a prank. But who pranks the police?
So the dispatcher sent officers to investigate the location where the call came from -- a car repair shop.
They arrived to see two men leaving while carrying a TV and a box, both of which they dropped when they saw police.
Police K-9s were sent after them and you can imagine how quickly they were caught.
The two men were charged with third-degree burglary. There is no charge for stupidity, apparently.
OK, so I've pulled enough pranks in my time and seen enough pranks in my time. One of the greatest pranks ever had me only as a spectator though.
Back when I attended Regina High School, I arrived at school one spring morning to see a fiberglass cow perched atop the gymnasium roof. I laughed like crazy and all the Sisters of Notre Dame scurried from classroom to classroom, pulling down the window shades so we wouldn't see it.
The South Euclid fire department was called to remove the cow. Too bad we had already seen it when we walked inside the school. Some things you just can't "un-see."
The Merry Pranksters may have swiped the cow from the Chester Freezer Beef company in Chesterland but it's not like they kept it. Instead of criminal and stupid, I call that "imaginative and hilarious."
