Officer-involved shooting at Lowe's in Willoughby, suspect dead

Officers shoot suspect outside Lowe's

WILLOUGHBY, OHIO - There was an officer-involved shooting in Willoughby at the Lowe's store in the parking lot about 1 p.m.  Wednesday.

A press conference regarding the incident was held at 4 p.m.

Willoughby Police Chief Jack Beckwith said a person at Lowe's recognized the suspect -- who police are not yet identifying -- as a person with warrants out for his arrest.

Two officers -- one in a cruiser and one on a motorcycle -- responded to Lowe's and saw the suspect in a parked car in the Lowe's parking lot.

The motorcycle officer pulled up behind the suspect's car. Beckwith said that the suspect, who was alone in the car, backed into the motorcycle, knocking it over. Both officers shouted for him to stop but he didn't. The officers fired as he drove off. One officer had a minor injury.

The car went airborne at some point and landed across Euclid Avenue wedged between two vehicles. Beckwith said the suspect had been shot and has died.

Beckwith had no further comment on the suspect, except to say that he was not a Willoughby resident.

The state Bureau of Criminal Investigation was called to the scene.
