As a diehard Cleveland Browns fan and a Cleveland Cavaliers fan, I feel qualified to jump into this discussion.
When the news broke this morning about LeBron James opting out his Miami Heat contract, my first thought was "Will there be a 'Decision 2'?"
When LeBron left in 2010 to "take his talents to South Beach," I understood the Akron native did what was best for him.
I've always maintained that it wasn't WHAT he did but HOW he did it -- with an ESPN special that dragged on forever and that he didn't even give his Cavaliers coach, owner or teammates a heads-up in advance.
As of today, opting out of his Heat contract, he's a free agent as of July 1. According to ESPN, if LeBron re-signs with Heat, he can earn $127.7 million over 5 years maximum. If he signs elsewhere, he can earn $94.8 million over 4 years maximum.
Will it be another summer of speculation?
And I ask -- what about Johnny Manziel?
Why am I dragging him into this?
Remember, LeBron has been Manziel's friend and mentor since they met at Miami Heat basketball game more than a year ago.
After announcing his intention to turn pro in January, Johnny Football signed with LRMR Management, the marketing firm run by LeBron's business partner and forever friend Maverick Carter. Know that Johnny is being jointly represented by LRMR and Fenway Sports Management, which became partners in 2011.
LRMR's sole client was LeBron until Manziel came aboard. Interesting huh?
But Johnny has Select Sports Group's Erik Burkhard as his agent for contract negotiations.
Yes, I know. It probably won't make any difference to LeBron that Manziel is a member of the Cleveland Browns. But it is an intriguing combination -- Johnny and Bronny.
