Police say husband shot wife, led police on brief chase

AKRON - Police confirm that detectives are investigating the shooting of a woman, 58, just after 8 a.m. Wednesday in the 1100 block of Johnland Avenue.

She was found with a gunshot wound to the head and taken to Akron City Hospital where she is listed in critical condition.

Detectives were looking for the victim’s husband.

Officers found him driving a Saturn SUV on South Arlington Street near 7th Avenue.  Following a brief car chase, police caught the husband and he was brought to the police station for questioning. 

The husband, Phillip E. Battle, 51, of  Akron, was charged with felonious assault and is in the Summit County Jail.
