Danielle Wiggins returns to her roots to find jobs for others

Traffic reporter Danielle Wiggins returns to her roots of making pizza for the restaurant chain Pizza Hut, even though the actual location of her first job at the iconic Geauga Lake Amusement Park is gone. In the process she finds out about jobs potentially coming to the old Geauga Lake property.

SOLON - My first job is literally a distant memory because the place is gone forever.

At 14-years-old I made and sold pizza in the Pizza Hut stand at the iconic Geauga Lake Amusement Park. The park closed for good in September of 2007, followed by the closing of Wildwater Kingdom in 2016.  Both closings left over 600 acres abandoned.

Plans are now underway to redevelop the land bringing jobs back to the property. Liberty Ford of Solon is moving its dealership to a portion of the site in Aurora.

The supercenter chain Meijer is also under contract to purchase land to build a new store on what used to be Geauga Lake’s parking lot in Bainbridge.  If all goes well, a representative for Meijer says the earliest the store would open is in the year 2020.  A typical Meijer’s store employs 250 to 300 people, ranging from entry-level positions to management.

“There will be a lot of high school kids I'm sure that would be able to benefit from that in the Aurora, the Solon, Bainbridge, the Kenston school districts,” said Bainbridge Township Trustee Jeff Markley.  “I think that’s good whenever you can create something that will give the kids jobs.”

Although my high school job at Geauga Lake is gone, the Pizza Hut down the street on state Route 43 in Solon is still there.

General Manager Adam Hawkins said his location is currently looking to hire delivery drivers.  Drivers must be at least 18-years-old with a clean driving record.  Hawkins says they’re always taking applications for other positions as well.  You must be at least 16-years-old for those positions.
