Canton man dead after I-77 crash

CANTON TOWNSHIP -- A Canton man is dead after an accident early Friday on Interstate 77 in Canton Township.

Leone Turpin, 28, was southbound on 77 about 5:25 a.m. in a 2004 Dodge pickup truck when he was struck head on. He was pronounced dead at Aultman Hospital in Canton.

According to the State Highway Patrol, Jesus P. Pelico, 20, from New Philadelphia was northbound in a 2003 Dodge passenger van on 77 when he lost control, crossed the grass median and struck Turpin's truck.

Pelico fled on foot but was apprehended shortly thereafter.

Because authorities received witness reports that there may have been multiple people who fled, a lengthy search was conducted using police dogs and the Highway Patrol's Aviation Unit.

No other persons were found associated with the crash.

Pelico was taken into custody and booked at the Stark County Jail.

Alcohol was a factor in the crash, according to the State Highway Patrol, and the Canton prosecutor's office is being consulted over criminal charges against Pelico.

Interstate 77 southbound was closed for several hours following the crash.
