Police in Jackson Township and Canal Fulton in Stark County have arrested a Canton man and charged him with a rash of break-ins in both communities.
Police said the investigations became a joint investigation when Gregory M. Smith, 44, of Canton, became a person of interest in both investigations.
Police in Canal Fulton and Jackson Township added that other jurisdictions were experiencing similar incidents, including the Summit County Sheriff’s Department, Akron Police Department, Tallmadge Police Department, Navarre Police Department and the Tuscarawas County Sheriff’s Department, according to a joint news release from the police in both Jackson Township and Canal Fulton.
Smith was arrested by Canal Fulton Police about 3 a.m. May 14, while entering the Canal Fulton Laundromat on S. Locust Street and breaking into coin machines, police said.
Jackson Township Police have charged Smith with three counts of breaking and entering, one count of theft and one count of attempted breaking and entering, according to the release.
The Canal Fulton Police Department has charged Smith with two counts of receiving stolen property, one count of possession of criminal tools, one count of obstructing official business, one count of tampering with coin machines and one count of theft., according to the police.
Smith was booked and is being held at the Stark County Jail awaiting a 10 a.m. May 24 pretrial, according to police.
