AKRON, Ohio -- The woman who survived being shot by her husband in her hospital room at Akron General Medical Center has taken a turn for the worse.

Akron Police say 65-year-old Barbara Wise was pronounced brain dead this morning at 10:20 a.m.  The 911 tapes released earlier today paint a chilling picture.

According to the tapes, nurses entered the room shortly after hearing the shot to see John Wise, 66 sitting near his wife of 45 years with a gun.  Neighbors describe John as being a kind, helpful guy.

"I was real shocked, I couldn't believe it.  I never thought John would do something like that," said a friend, Joe.

According to neighbors Barbara was taken to the hospital by ambulance about a week and a half prior to the shooting. They seem to have their own theory about why Wise shot her.

Joe believes it was his love for his wife and her failing health that made him pull the trigger.

"He was maybe just trying to help her out," said Joe who believes John could have been trying to end his wife's suffering.

Wise is facing attempted murder charges and will appear before a court on Monday.
