Stow | Plant shuts down, 115 laid off

STOW -- More than 100 workers in Stow are about to lose their jobs.

Mactac, which is a Bemis Company, is closing its manufacturing part of the plant. The closure becomes effective in May.

Finding new jobs won't be easy.

Some workers have been with the company for more than 30 years.

Bemis makes specialty materials that are used in all kinds of products, from food packaging to outdoor signs to medical patches.

The company says it's closing the plant for financial purposes.

Stow Mayor Sara Drew says Bemis has other plants out of state to take over the workload.

The company started in Stow back in the 1950s.

The mayor says she's concerned about the workers.

"Mactac, and now Bemis, has been in the city of Stow for decades. There are multiple generations who are familiar with that company, so it is definitely a blow to the city that one of our oldest employers is experiencing this," Drew said.

Even though the manufacturing part is closing, 160 employees from corporate headquarters will stay.

The company and the city are helping workers with job services.
