Akron mom sentenced to prison for assaulting school officials

AKRON -- Summit County Prosecutor Sherri Bevan Walsh said Judge Jane Davis sentenced Jessica A. Smallwood, 25, of Akron, on Tuesday to a 14-month prison term.

On Feb. 21, Smallwood and her son entered Glover Elementary School, where her son is a student.

Smallwood became irate and began arguing with the principal and a teacher. Smallwood cursed at them, pushed the teacher and knocked the principal to the ground.

Before leaving, Smallwood punched a cafeteria employee who intervened to help stop the assault.

School administrators quickly placed the school on lockdown in compliance with A.L.I.C.E. school safety protocol.

Akron Police responded immediately and arrested Smallwood.

On Aug. 14, Smallwood pleaded guilty to two charges of assault, felonies of the fifth degree, and one charge of assault, a misdemeanor of the first degree.
