Barberton: Man who killed mother gets life in prison, no parole

AKRON -- Summit County Prosecutor Sherri Bevan Walsh confirmed that announced today that Summit County Common Pleas Judge Tom Teodosio sentenced Michael Petrie, 33, of Barberton, to life in prison.

He will never be eligible for parole.

In mid-October 2012, Petrie killed his 67-year-old mother Maureen Petrie by striking her on the left side of the head and neck with the butt of a sai, a traditional martial arts weapon consisting of a pointed baton with two curved prongs sticking out of the handle.

Petrie also stabbed her in the face and heart. The body was not discovered in the home until April 2013. Petrie lived in the home for the majority of that time.

Petrie entered a not guilty by reason of insanity plea at the initial court appearance.

However, the jury found that Petrie was legally sane at the time of the crime and found him guilty of aggravated murder, murder and abuse of a corpse.
