AKRON -- Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company has selected Wingfoot One as the name of its newest blimp.
The name was selected from nearly 15,000 names submitted by the public in an online contest that began four months ago. Wingfoot One won with 35 percent of the vote.
The name was submitted by Charlotte White, an Akron resident of 76 years. White's stepfather was a former Goodyear employee. White is excited she finally has an opportunity to ride the famed blimp.
WHAT DIDN'T MAKE THE CUT: Hilarious rejected name suggestions for the new Goodyear blimp
As the winner, she will spend a day involved with the blimp's activities. The other top nine finalists will receive a set of Goodyear tires.
"Wingfoot" is the name of the Goodyear trademark, inspired by a statue of the Roman god Mercury. The company has used it as its trademark since 1901.
The new blimp, a semi-rigid, Zeppelin model LZ N07-101, is in the final stages of test flights. It will be officially christened in a ceremony in August. Once in service, the blimp will travel the United States, where it can be seen over some of the nation's biggest events.
