Vermilion schools to delay start due to water damage

VERMILION -- Vermilion schools will delay the start of school by four days to give contractors more time to complete work after rain damaged Sailorway Middle School.

The first day for the 2014-2015 school year will be Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2014.

According to the district, a rainstorm on Aug. 2 caused significant water damage at Sailorway.

"Our projects were moving along on schedule prior to the storm," Superintendent Philip Pempin said in a news release. "Restoration specialist got to work immediately to repair the damage, but cleanup takes time. We felt it was important to make sure the building is clean, safe and dry prior to students returning to school."

Board members agreed that delaying the start of all three schools was the best solution.

"Our school calendar includes additional hours to help us deal with issues like this," according to board President Dale Dawson.

The district says school starting and ending times will remain the same, and parents and students should check the school website and Facebook page for a full list of back-to-school events.
