Westlake | Inmate found dead in bunk at jail

WESTLAKE -- Authorities are investigating after an inmate died at the Westlake city jail Wednesday.

Raphael D. Benjamin, 32, of Cleveland, was found unresponsive lying on his cell bunk about 1 p.m., according to police.

Westlake Police Department employees performed CPR and used an automated external defibrillator but were unable to revive him.

Benjamin was arrested about 1:50 p.m. Tuesday after a traffic stop on Interstate 90. He had hypodermic needles in his possession, was driving under suspension and had a warrant for his arrest from the Brooklyn Police Department. Police later found a scale, baggies and a small amount of suspected marijuana in the vehicle he was driving.

The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation and the Cuyahoga County medical examiner are investigating.
