Man crawls from fatal crash 3 days later

A severely injured man crawled from the wreckage of a fatal crash three days after the vehicle he was driving left an Indiana roadway and crashed into tree, police said.

Kevin Bell, 39, of Dover, Pennsylvania, suffered injuries to his legs from a Saturday crash on US 50 near the Jennings County and Ripley County line that left the other passenger, Nikki K. Reed, 37 of Seymour, Indiana, dead.

According to Indiana State Police, Bell was not able to leave the vehicle and crawl back to the roadway because of his injuries until Monday evening, when troopers found him near the scene.

Police said that at some point Saturday afternoon, Bell lost control of the 1999 Ford Explorer he was driving. The vehicle traveled down an embankment at the 8600 block of US 50 and struck a tree. Reed, who was in the front passenger seat, suffered fatal injuries and died instantly.

Bell was transported from the scene to St. Vincent-Jennings Hospital in North Vernon, Indiana, and is expected to recover.

Reed had been reported missing Sunday by her family and the missing person investigation determined that Bell, Reed's boyfriend, had been out of contact with his family since Saturday. Family members said Reed went to Pennsylvania to pick up Bell.

Police said the scene of the crash was well off US 50 and not immediately visible from the road.

The investigation is ongoing.
