EASTON, Pa. -- Medical staffers have lifted the quarantine imposed on parts of an eastern Pennsylvania prison last week due to an unknown illness that affected several dozen inmates.

Officials say about 30 prisoners in three blocks of Northampton County Prison had symptoms including vomiting, diarrhea and nausea.

Director of Corrections Robert Meyers tells The (Easton) Express-Times that no one was hospitalized due to the illnesses first reported last Wednesday.

State health officials were contacted and began running tests, but officials have so far not diagnosed the problem.

Meyers says the prison stopped all nonessential movement in those blocks and provided inmates with more fluids to ensure that they remained hydrated.

He says no new cases have arisen since Friday, so medical personnel felt confident enough to lift the quarantine.
