SPRINGFIELD, Ohio -- A police chief says an SUV driver accused of striking and killing a 12-year-old girl while fleeing police has been charged with aggravated vehicular homicide.

Springfield police Chief Steve Moody says Joseph L. Thomson, 30, of Springfield, also was arraigned Monday in Clark County Municipal Court on a count of failure to comply with a police order.

Court officials say Thomson pleaded not guilty.

Bail was set at $100,000. Records do not show an attorney for the Springfield man.

Moody says an officer clocked Thomson going 62 mph in a 35 mph zone and tried to follow the SUV before it crashed Sunday.

Moody says Thomson hit a pole, veered off the road and struck Kayla Lynn Mongold. She died at the scene.
