OSLO, Norway - Geological monitoring services are reporting that an earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.6 has struck off Jan Mayen island in Arctic waters between Greenland and Norway.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries. The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre and the U.S. Geological Survey say the quake struck Thursday at 1343 GMT (9:43 a.m. EDT).

The USGC says the epicenter was 58 miles (93 kilometers) northwest of Jan Mayen, a Norwegian island with a research station.

Erik Persheim, an electronics engineer on the island, told AP that the quake could be felt on the island, but no one was injured.
