AVON LAKE -- What if the best way to lose a few pounds or quit smoking was to just relax? That's the concept behind hypnotherapy: tapping into the subconscious to make behavioral changes.
Meg Brutoczky is like millions of Americans resolving to lose weight and get healthy this New Year. But she says her will power stands in the way of her and her goal.
"Will power alone isn't enough. Because that's all logical rational thinking minds and when people are trying to make change, they need to tap into the power of the subconscious mind," says hypnotherapist Mary Ellen Ott.
Ott uses hypnosis as a positive thinking tool. For people wanting to achieve weight loss, quit tobacco use, or any behavioral change.
"The studies showed that people two to seventeen times more weight with hypnosis than without," says Ott
Using deep relaxation methods, Ott talks Meg through visualizing her goals. Meg remains fully conscious the entire session.
So, after 20 minutes did it work?
"I didn't want to come back, I was so relaxed," says Meg.
Meg says she feels a boost to her motivation.
"I think it will help me to relax and think about things before I do them...before I was like, I want to do this but I can't go without it, like I have no will power and now I feel like, oh, I can do it."
This thinking is what the hypnosis attempts to bring to our conscious mind.
"When you think about all the things that have been programmed into us from a very early age, whether it's from parents, teachers everything that you've seen felt and experienced, what's been modeled to you. That's all programmed under our subconscious, and most of the time what's there no longer serves us," says Ott.
