AVON -- It started when Julie Frick's son came home with an 84 percent and that was a "C" on Avon's grading scale.

"He was grounded, and he said if we lived in Westlake, it would have been a B," says Frick.

She started researching other districts' grading scales and found that most in the area had what's called "10 point scales."

For example: 93-100 equals an A, 90-92equals an A-, 87-89 a B+ and so on.

But Avon's current grading scale is 93-100 equals an A, 85-92 equals a B, 74-84 equals a C, and 65-73 equals a D.

"We aren't dumbing it down, we just want to level the playing field," says Frick.

In fact, Westlake, Avon Lake, Bay Village and Rocky River all have the 10-point scale.

"We are recommending the 10 point scale for the fall, " says Avon High School Principal Chad Coffman.

He was part of a committee that reviewed the policy and decided thta, for competitive reasons, the scale should change. The school board still has to approve the change.

Coffman says colleges still look at ACT/SAT scores and class rank for acceptance into universities, but it can impact scholarship eligibility.
