BRUNSWICK -- The economy forced several communities to cancel their fireworks this weekend. When word came down to residents here that their fireworks were being cancelled, the residents stepped up.
The approved 2009 budget by Brunswick's City Council did not have fireworks in it.
One of the reasons, as many cities are facing, was financial constraints.
Brunswick wasn't the only city, as Para, Elyria and Euclid were forced to cancel their 2009 fireworks.
The total cost really was about $150,000, the Euclid mayor said, but the city not only has to buy the fireworks but also foot the bill to clean up the park afterwards and to pay the city's safety forces.
Up until about a week ago, Brunswick's stadium was going to stay empty, as the city was about $5,000 short of being able to pay for the fireworks.
When that news got out, many businesses and private donations came in to offset those costs and Brunswick now has just over $13,500, which means this will be the largest fireworks display the City of Brunswick has ever held.
Parks and recreation Director John Piepsney said private donations and business donations came in not only from Brunswick but from surrounding communities.
