GARFIELD HEIGHTS -- On Friday, police surrounded St. Monica's School on Rockside Road here after a suspect in a Bedford home invasion robbery was seen running into the building. When he tried to escape, police arrested him.

Police said that at 10:30 a.m., two men with guns dressed in black t-shirts with "POLICE" written on them forced entry into a home occupied by a man and his two young children, ages 1 and 2.

The suspects handcuffed the man and searched the house. The suspects then removed the handcuffs and put flex-cuffs on the victim and ran out.

An undetermined amount of money was taken. A description of the men and the vehicle they were driving was given to police by neighbors of the victim.

A Bedford police detective spotted the vehicle and called for back-up.

When the suspects realized they were being followed, they attempted to lose the detective on the side streets in the Turney and Rockside roads area.

Another officer and the detective were able to box the suspects' vehicle in with their cars.

One was immediately taken into custody and the other fled on foot through the yards.

Police officers from Garfield Heights, Maple Heights and Walton Hills assisted Bedford officers with establishing a perimeter in the surrounding streets.

The fleeing suspect ran through the parking lot of St. Monica's then ran into the school. The school is closed for summer but was partially open while employees were sitting up for the parish carnival that started Friday night.

The school was surrounded and, when officers began searching the building, the suspect attempted to flee out of the building and was taken into custody.

Some of the items recovered were a BB pistol, an Airsoft pistol, two black T-shirts with "POLICE" on the front and back, and two fake police badges.

At this time, a motive for the crime has not been established.

Charges are pending on the result of the investigation and the suspects' names have not been released.
