CHAGRIN FALLS -- Chagrin Falls schools Superintendent Steve Thompson has notified all district parents that there are two verified cases of the H1N1 (swine flu) virus in the district. One affected student attends Gurney Elementary School, the other the Intermediate School, Thompson said, in an email notification just sent out.

Gurney has students from pre-kindergarten through third garde and is located off Bell Road in South Russell.

The Intermediate School is at 77 East Washington Street and has about 450 students in grades four through sixth.

Chagrin Falls Middle School is at 400 East Washington Street, on the same campus as Chagrin Falls High School.

New hand sanitizers were placed in each school building at the start of the school year.

The Chagrin Falls school district has had H1N1 information on its website since the start of the school year and even sent a letter out to parents Sept. 4, with what the district was doing proactively.

Thompson's email, sent out today (Wednesday) at 4:30 p.m., states that the present symptoms appear to be mild and the students are expected to recover in 3 to 4 days.

"We will continue to monitor these students and to keep you informed of any additional verified cases," Thompson said.

Friday night is Chagrin Falls High School's Homecoming game against crosstown rival Kenston High School for the "Battle of Ol' 422." The C.S. Harris stadium is located at the high school campus.

School officials are encouraging students to take simple precautions.

"Please encourage your child to cover their mouth and nose with a tissue when they cough or sneeze. Please continue to practice good hand hygiene."

"If your child becomes ill, we are asking you to keep your child at home until at least 24 hours after they no longer have a fever or signs of a fever, without the use of fever-reducing medicine," Thompson said.

"Our custodial staff has been making a conscientious effort to carefully clean those objects that are more likely to have frequent hand contact such as desks, door knobs, keyboards, or pens, with cleaning agents that are usually used in these areas."

"We encourage early medical evaluation for sick students and staff at higher risk of complications from flu."
