Mayfield Heights man missing after Coast Guard mid-air collision

SAN DIEGO -- The U.S. Coast Guard continues to search for seven Coast Guard aircrew and two Marine Corps aircrew missing off the coast of San Clemente Island, Calif. since 7 p.m. Thursday. Missing from the Coast Guard C-130 is Petty Officer 2nd Class Carl P. Grigonis, 35, of Mayfield Heights.

The search has been continuous since the mid-air collision occurred at approximately 7 p.m. Thursday between a Coast Guard C-130 aircraft and a Marine Corps AH-1W helicopter.

There were six other crew members, in addition to Grigonis, the navigator, aboard the C-130.  All are stationed at Coast Guard Air Station in Sacramento, Calif., where their aircraft was based.

The missing crew members from the Marine Corps helicopter are: Maj. Samuel Leigh, 35, of Kennebec, Maine, and 1st Lt. Thomas Claiborne, 26, of Douglas, Colo.

The search effort has saturated an area totaling 644 square miles and includes assistance from surface and air assets from the Coast Guard, Navy, Marine Corps and the Customs Border Protection Air/Marine Branch.
