AKRON -- The Veterans Day observance at the University of Akron actually got underway at 11 a.m. Tuesday, with UA's Army Reserve Officers Training Corps 42nd Ohio Volunteer Battalion conducting a 24-hour vigil, standing guard over a symbolic eternal flame starting at 11:11 a.m. Tuesday until 11:11 a.m. Wednesday at the Buchtel Common flagpole.

On Wednesday (Nov. 11), beginning at 8 a.m., a continental breakfast honoring veterans will be held at Martin University Center, 105 Fir Hill.

Scheduled to speak are U.S. Reps. Tim Ryan and Betty Sutton.

Larry Van Camp, a U.S. Army World War II prisoner of war, and Cadet Josha Bochkor will read the Ex-Prisoner of War Pledge of Allegiance.

At 10 a.m., everyone will gather at the Buchtel Common flagpole. Veterans from all the branches of service that have served in World War II, the Korean War or the Vietnam War will conduct a wreath laying ceremony.

There also will be a 21-gun salute and addresses by Col. William Nome, Ohio Military Reserve, and retired Army Maj. Dave Sears.

At 11:11 a.m. Wednesday, the honor guard will conclude its vigil.
