KENT -- An autopsy will be performed Monday on a Kent State student who died six days after he was beaten in what Kent police termed an unprovoked assault.

Christopher M. Kernich, 23, was pronounced dead at Akron City Hospital Saturday afternoon.

On November 15, Kernich was found on a tree lawn on Main Street with severe head injuries.

Kent police arrested two men after the incident in the early morning hours of Nov. 15.

Ronald G. Kelly, 20, and Adrian A. Barker, 21, both of Akron, are in the Portage County Jail in connection with Kernich's assault. Each has been charged with felonious assault.

Once Monday's autopsy is completed, Kent detectives will talk with prosecutors to see if more charges will be filed against Kelly and Barker.
