
CLEVELAND -- An officer was killed overnight on the west side of Cleveland.
The incident took place shortly before midnight Wednesday evening on West 98th Street near Madison Avenue.
First District Vice Officer Johnathon Schroeder was attempting to serve a warrant when he was shot through the side of his bullet-proof vest.
Schroeder was with a group of 12 officers attempting to arrest 37-year-old Wilson Santiago, wanted on a burglary and rape charge.
When officers got to the door, they say Santiago slammed the door closed, then shot twice through the door.
Police shot at least fourt times through the front door. After about 20 minutes, Santiago surrendered to police.
The 10-year veteran with the Cleveland Police was taken to MetroHealth Medical Center where he died.
Santiago is in custody in connection with the shooting.
Schroeder, a Pittsburgh native, is survived by his wife and his 10-month-old son.
The last Cleveland police officer to be killed in the line of duty was Wayne Leon on June 25, 2000.
